The body takes its cue from light. This ritual lowers the lights — and the volume — so the evening can do what it is meant to.

The Ritual

    Lower the lights

    Switch off the overheads and light a candle or two. Warm, low light tells the body it is nearly time.

    A five-minute tidy

    Reset one room — clear surfaces, plump the cushions. A calm space makes a calm mind.

    Something warm, no screen

    Herbal tea, a few pages of a book. Let the phone charge in another room.

    Three things from today

    Name three small good things from the day before you sleep. End on the light.
